Akron Brass Honors Community Service Award Recipient

Wicksburg Volunteer Fire/Rescue Wins Spirit Award

Wooster, Ohio (October 29, 2014) – Akron Brass Company, a global marketer and manufacturer of high performance firefighting equipment, honored Wicksburg Volunteer Fire/Rescue in Newton, AL with the nationally recognized Spirit of Community Service Award. The community rallied together to push them over the top, taking first place in the contest. The Madray Springs Vol. Fire Department in Jesup, GA was the runner up.

Community members nominated their local departments to receive the honor of the Spirit of Community Service Award. In addition to this, the winner would also receive 300 First Alert Dual Sensor Smoke and Fire Alarms, 10 Nest Protect Units, along with other items. More than 244,000 votes were received over the course of the competition. Of those votes, 121,332 of them came from the small town of Newton, giving their beloved volunteers the recognition they
deserve.

Chief Wanda Andress commented, “It is a great honor to win any award but a Spirit of Community Service Award is the top honor. For our community and surrounding communities to have a chance to vote and say, ’We support you and appreciate everything y’all do’ was just the icing on the cake for us.”

Wicksburg Volunteer Fire/Rescue is known in its community for providing excellent service. They are present at many local events, provide safety training to all ages and even help deliver gifts at Christmas. The volunteers showed their continued desire to serve others even in the winning of the prize. Worried that they may not be able to use all the smoke alarms in their small community, the department chose to send 100 of them to Madray Springs VFD. Chief Andress explained, “We are in the business [of] service. Not just our community but anyone that needs our help…This way the donation from Akron Brass helped two communities instead of just one.”
